(RG101/2788H/017/28 FFTJ) William WOOD, known as Bill, was a doctor, noted for his work with the Salk polio vaccine in Canada up to 1955. Her name was Mary Elizabeth TARRANT. She succeeded, and he returned to the UK to lead Glaxo's poliomyelitis vaccine development. Dr. Bill WOOD was responsible for the British version of the Salk vaccine and received an OBE for services to medicine. He was definitely back in the UK in 1956, living in Chalfont St. Giles, Buckinghamshire. At some point towards the end of her life, his mother Elizabeth WOOD formerly EDGOOSE (1881-1957) moved in with Bill and Mary and was living there when she died. The marriage between William WOOD and Mary Elizabeth TARRANT was registered on 10 January 1958 at the Register Office, Amersham, by Licence. William WOOD, a bachelor, 35 years old and a Medical Practitioner of 12 Garners Close, Denham Lane, Chafont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire, was the son of William WOOD, a deceased colliery engineer. Mary Elizabeth TARRANT, a 36 year old spinster, was a secretary living at Maphilda, Poges Lane, Stoke Poges. She was the daughter of John TARRANT, a railway clerk. Witnesses were M. B. WORLEY and E.
