      NOTES & QUERIES:
      1) It has been proved conclusively that William Groom MASTIN (1829-1855) was the father of the William Groom MASTIN (1855-1900) who married Rose Ann Amy SMITH in New South Wales, Australia in 1886.

      2) Although William Groom MASTIN died in October 1855 this does not preclude him from being the father of a William Groom MASTIN aged 5 at the time of the 1861 census taken on 7 April. If he had been born in July/August/September 1855 (or betwtween May 1855 and March 1856) he would have been aged 0 in April 1856, 1 in April 1857, 2 in April 1858, 3 in April 1859, 4 in April 1860, and 5 in April 1861. He could therefore have been conceived as early as August 1854. His birth certificate shows him to have been born on 7 August 1855, just ten weeks before his father died.

      3) The census return gives his age as 5 in 1861 and 15 in 1871. His grandmother and her children with whom he was living would have known when he was born and the circumstances surrounding his birth. In 1881, when he was said to 23 years old, he was not living with any member of his family and, without a birth certificate (he did not know his date of birth when he married on 11 January 1886), might have been unsure of his age.
