      According to a microfiche copy of Algarkirk parish register John, son of John and Elizabeth CRAFT, was born on 11 September 1840 and baptised there at the same time as his brother James on 27 March 1845 (letter from Mrs. Averil Stephens 12.03.2003).

      From the 1841 census of Algarkirk, Lincolnshire:
      John CROFT (sic), aged 25, agricultural labourer, born in Lincolnshire;
      Elizabeth CROFT (sic), aged 25, born in Lincolnshire;
      William CROFT (sic), aged 5, born in Lincolnshire;
      James CROFT (sic), aged 2, born in Lincolnshire;
      John CROFT (sic), aged 1 month, born in Lincolnshire.

      Elizabeth's 70 year old aunt, Alice EDGOOSE, lived next door with Mathew and Mary TEBB.

      Jonathan and Helen EDGOOSE were living next door to Jonathan's sister Elizabeth CRAFT at Wyatt Drove, Algarkirk, in 1851:

      He was unmarried according to the 1861 census of Algarkirk, but by November 1869 he was married with three children and kept the Duke of York public house in Boston (source: letter to William CRAFT from his mother Elizabeth dated 1869).

      Their daughter Emma Jane CRAFT was born on at Algarkirk Fen, Lincolnshire, on 10 October 1866. John CRAFT was described as a farm labourer on the birth certificate.

      The likelihood that John and Emma CRAFT had moved to Sheffield, Yorkshire, is confirmed by the entry in the 1891 census of 82 Liverpool Street, Attercliffe cum Darnell:

      John Henry CRAFT wrote to a niece in 1959:
      "There were three brothers in father's family. William (my father), James and John, the latter died early in life. James had some family, one was an electrician and lived in Sheffield. James was employed on the Great Northern Railway for many years as a signalman."
