  THE SURNAME WINFREY On 5 December 1995 I received a letter from Sandra .......... in response to my query following her article on 'The Winfreys' in the Lincolnshire Family History Society Magazine. An extract follows: "I am sorry I cannot be of much help regarding your Richard and Mary WINFREY of Long Sutton, other than to say that I am pretty sure that Fabian WINFREY (top left on family tree) went to Fleet with the family in the 1570s, as a Fabian WINFREY died there in 1630 (probably son of the above). Fleet is about 2 miles from Long Sutton and there were WINFREYs at Gedney, Gosberton, and Long Sutton for many years (certainly up to the 1891 census) so a connection is very likely. The family is last recorded at Howell with the death of Anthony in 1667. I am sending you a copy of the Howell WINFREY tree for you to send to your relatives in Australia." Five years later, in November 2000, Paul WINFREY of Scunthorpe shared with me a tree which he had been sent by the WINFREY family of Long Sutton in Lincolnshire showing the descendants of Richard WINFREY and his wife Mary formerly LEACH down to the mid 1900s. In October 2006 Don WINFREY of Lakewood, Washington, USA, sent me complete copies of the research commissioned by Robley E. WINFREY from two different genealogical firms. He traced a line that went back to a John WINFREY who died in Howell, Lincolnshire, in 1573. "The English WINFREYs are an interesting line that I have been trying to find a connection to. It is especially interesting that that the earliest WINFREYs in the Colonies were 'dissenters' and this branch of Richard WINFREY from Lincolnshire were 'dissenters' too. Wish I could find a connection from the Boston port from where I am sure they sailed. Most of my info on this line comes from Richard Russell WINFREY who sent me all the genealogical data on his family that he could round up a couple of years ago and from the book Men of Mark by R. P. WINFREY, son of Sir Richard WINFREY, 1977, East Mdland Allied Press. I have attached a Descendant Chart and hope it provides you with some more info. If you see any errors or have additional info, I would be happy to hear back from you." (donlwinfrey@earthlink.net, 11 October 2006) Don WINFREY also wrote that he had been unable to find any connection between Sir Richard WINFREY's line tracing back to a succession of 'Richards' in about 1730; the line traced back to the parish of Howell in Lincolnshire in 1573; and Paul WINFREY's line which can be traced back to the Thomas WINFREY of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, who was born in 1766 and whose eldest daughter Mary had an illegitimate son John Wood WINFREY in Sotter Poorhouse, Scotter, Lincolnshire, in 1822. If one can accept that the use of certain less common first names suggests a link between families then the Fabian WINFREY who married Joan BROOKES at Howell,Lincolnshire, on 15 November 1570 may be the same Fabian who died at Fleet in south Lincolnshire in 1630. A study of the first name Maram may well enable us to trace a connection between several south Lincolnshire parishes, including Holbeach, Long Sutton, and Surfleet.
