"On Sunday morning the 30th ult., as some boys were amusing themselves on the ice, they observed a dog eating some meat on the top of a pigsty adjoining a cottage called the White House, near Spalding toll-bar, on the Pinchbeck road, occupied by a woman named COLLY, together with her daughter and her son, a boy aged twelve years old, and a woman named LAMMAMAN. On examining the meat, there appeared to be two shoulders and a leg of mutton, recently slaughtered, which had been concealeled under some bay until discovered by the dog: the boys apprised the inmates of the house of what they had found, and the women took the meat in, but declared they did not know from whence it came. So extraordinary a case soon reaching the earrs of the constables, in the evening they secured the whole party, and a general search commenced, when one leg and a shoulder of mutton were found salted down; on proceeding farther, they discovered a large quantity of wood, of various sorts and sizes, not less than a cart-load, under the bed, and in different parts of the house. The party were detained in custody the whole of the night, and on the following morning it was ascertained that Mr. David PLOWRIGHT, farmer, of Pinchbeck, hahad had a sheep slaughtered the previous Saturday night, from a pasture within half a mile of the above cottage, and two shoulders and one leg were missing. After a long examination of the circumstances before the magistrates, which occupied all Monday, no evidence being adduced to show how the mutton came there, all the prisoners were liberated. The footsteps of two men were distinctly traced from the pigsty to the place where the sheep was slaughtered and back again; and there being no male inhabitant belonging to the party, except the boy, as stated above, no doubt could be entertained that more expert hands were connected with them: at present they have escaped detection."
