According to the 1881 census of 10 Ducie Street, Wortley in Bramley, Yorkshire, he was 18 years old, a telegraph clerk, and was born in Frampton, Lincolnshire.

At the time of the 1891 William CRAFT, a 28 year old Frampton born railway signalman, was living at Palmerstown, Cadoxton juxta Barry, Glamorgan, Wales, with his wife Emma M. CRAFT and two children. Emma was 30 years old and was born at Darley Abbey, Derbyshire. Their daughter Rose A CRAFT was 5 years old and was born at Hull, Yorkshire. Their son Frank CRAFT was 3 years old and was born at Royston, Yorkshire (RG12/4407/31/15).
William CRAFT's one year old daughter Florence CRAFT, born at Boston in Lincolnshire, was staying with her grandfather James CRAFT at 5 West Terrace, Boston. William's sister Elizabeth CRAFT was acting as housekeeper.
