EMILY or EMMA CRAFT 1866--
No trace has been found in the GRO indexes of the birth of an Emily CRAFT in 1866 or 1867. However, the birth of an Emma CRAFT was registered in 1866. She was born at Bramley, Yorkshire, on 8 December 1866, daughter of James and Eliza CRAFT.

At the time of the 1881 census she was 14 years old and living with her parents and three brothers at 10 Ducie Street, Wortley in Bramley, Yorkshire:

William CRAFT, son, aged 18, telegraph clerk, born at Frampton, Lincolnshire;

*Emily CRAFT, daughter, aged 14, scholar, born at Bramley, Yorkshire;

In 1901 two children of her brother William Jonathan CRAFT were living with her at 14 Claremont Place, Leeds, Yorkshire:

NOTES & QUERIES:
I have wondered for years why one of
the grandchildren of Elizabeth Craft nee Edgoose (1815-1900) was
born and baptised Emma Craft in 1866 but was known as Emily
from a very early age. I solved the mystery last week whilst scanning
birth certificates. Two of Elizabeth's sons, John and James Craft,
lived many miles apart. John stayed in Lincolnshire which is in the
east Midlands and James moved far away to Sheffield in the north. The
only contact would have been by letter. Emma, daughter of James and
Eliza Craft, was born on 8 December 1866, followed quickly by Emma
Jane, daughter of John and Emma Craft, on 10 December the same year!
Obviously Emma Jane was named after her mother but plain Emma's name
was unofficially changed to Emily. Mystery solved by seeing those two
certificates side by side.
