EDGOOSE, James (1740-1772)
James, son of John and Mary EDGOOSE, was baptised at Spalding, Lincolnshire, on 16 December 1740.

John EDGOOSE had married Mary JINKINGS at Tydd St. Mary on 9 June 1724.
James EDGOOSE and Elizabeth PILKINGTON (or PILKINTON) were married by licence at Stamford All Saints, Lincolnshire, on 12 July 1761. James EDGOOSE was 21 years old, a bachelor and a tailor. Elizabeth PILKINGTON was a 24 year old spinster. She signed her name 'PILKINTON', whereas James EDGOOSE could only make his mark. Witnesses were John WOOLLMAN and John FOUNTAIN. John WOOLLMAN, slater, of Stamford All Saints signed the Marriage Bond.

William, son of James and Mary EDGOSS (sic), was baptised at Stamford St. George on 18 March 1764. This is the first record of the variant EDGOSS which remained in use for 103 years.
On 22 April 1766 an Elizabeth EDGOOSE, aged 30, wife of James EDGOOSE, was buried at Spalding, Lincolnshire. There is no proof that this is the wife of the James EDGOOSE who married Elizabeth PILKINTON at Stamford All Saints in 1761.
The banns of a marriage between James EDGOSS, a widower from Spalding in Lincolnshire, and Elizabeth PALMER, a Wisbech St. Peter spinster, were read at Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire, on 20 May and 24 June 1770. There is no record of a marriage. On 20 May John EDGOSS was described as 'of Spalding' but on 24 June he was described as 'of this parish'.
On 14 October 1772 a James EDGOOSE, aged 30, was buried at Spalding, Lincolnshire - i.e. born 1741 or 1742. There is no proof that this is the same James EDGOOSE who married Elizabeth PILKINTON at Stamford All Saints in 1761.

Mary EDGOSS, spinster, married Richard LIGHTFOOT, tailor, at Stamford St. George on 26 March 1782. Witnesses were Mary PILKINTON (sic) and John COLE.
