    Elizabeth, daughter of John and Ann EDGOOSE, was baptised at Gosberton, Lincolnshire, on 15 May 1769. John EDGOOSE had married Ann DOLTON at Gosberton on 21 September 1768.

    William BARNES of Surfleet and Elizabeth EDGOOSE of Gosberton were married at Gosberton on 28 November 1787. Thomas PETCHELL and Robert TYLER were witnesses. Robert TYLER had married Ann, widow of John EDGOOSE, on 10 October 1781.

    Elizabeth BARNES of Gosberton, widow, died on 4 July 1823 leaving 6 children, John, William, Elizabeth (who had married Robert DUCKET of Quadring in 1820), Mary, Sarah, and David. The latter three children were under 21. In her will dated 30 June 1823 she refers to land in Quadring and gives instructions that she is to be buried at Surfleet.

    She was buried at Surfleet on 6 July 1823. According to the parish register she was 55 years old.

    Will of William BARNES:
    "This is the last Will and Testament of me William BARNES of Quadring in the County of Lincoln, Farmer, made this sixteenth Day of March in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight Hundred & Eighteen as follows First I give and bequeath to my So Son William BARNES the Sum of ten Pounds of good & lawful Money of Great Britain to be Paid to him by my Executor & Executrix at the Expiration of Twelve Months after my Decease I give and bequeath to my Daughter Eliz. BARNES the Sum of Fifty P Pounds of good & lawful Money of Great Britain to be Paid to her by my Executor & Executrix herin after Named at the Expiration of Twelve Months after my Decease I give and Devise unto my loving Wife Eliz: BARNES & to my Children Mary, Saarahah, & David BARNES jointly all that Piece or Parcel of Land lying & being in Quadring Fen containing Nine Acres be the Same more or less on these Conditions, That is, if my Wife or any of my Said Children Mary, Sarah & David, should happen to Die before the youngest comes of Age the Survivor or Survivors of them shall be Heirs of the shares of the Deceased But when my Wife Departs this Life, if then my son David be come of Age and not till then, then I order & direct the Trustee hereinafter Named to Sell and despose of the said Nine Acres of Land, and the Money arising from such Sale shall be equally Divided amongst my Said Children Mary, Sarah & David BARNES, or such of them as may be living at the Time of Such Sale
    And I do hereby nominate and appoint my Son John BARNES As Guardian & Trustee for my Said Wife, Mary, Sarah & David BARNES, and to have full Power over the Said Land to let the Same and receive Rents and to Act in all Matters and things relating to the said Piece of Land, And at the Time of Sale of Such Land, the said John BARNES's receipts for the Purchase Money shall be a full & sufficient descharge to the Purchaser for as much Money as shall be contained in Such Receipt
    And I further Order and Direct that my said Son John BARNES shall apply the Rents of the shares of my said Children in the said Nine Acres of Land toward their Maintenance & bringing up - Lastly as to all the rest residue and Remainder of my Personal Property be it of what Kind or nature soever or where soever situate, I give and bequeath the Same unto my loving Wife Eliz: BARNES and to my Son John BARNES whom I nominate and Appoint my Executrix & Executor of this my Will and Testament, they my Said Executrix & Executor shall at all Times bring up, maintain, Cloath, and give Proper Education to my Said Children, Mary Sarah & David BARNES untill they shall severally Accomplish their Ages of Twenty one years And that they my Executrix and Executor Shall Pay all my Debts & Funeral Expences, and all Expences of proving this my Will. I do hereby revoke all other wills At any Time heretofore made by me and Declare this to be the last unto which I have Set my Hand and Seal the Day and Year first above written

    "This is the last Will and Testament of me Elizabeth BARNES of Gosberton in the County of Lincoln Widow I give and devise unto my Children Mary BARNES Sarah BARNES and David BARNES All my Estate Lands Tenements and Hereditaments lying and being in Quadring in the said County or elsewhere To hold unto them the said Mary BARNES Sarah BARNES and David BARNES their Heirs and Assigns for ever to take as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants I give and bequeath unto my Sons Williiam BARNES and John BARNES All my Goods Chattels Personal Estate and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever and of wyhat Nature or Kind soever that I shall or may Die seized or possessed of Upon Trust that they the said William BARNES and John BARNES and the Survivor of them and the Executors and Administrators of such Survivor do and shall with all convenient Speed after my Decease call in and compel Payment of all such part of my Personal Estate as shall consist of Monies due and owing upon Securities or otherwise and do and shall sell and dispose of and convert into Money such part or parts of my said Personal Estate as shall not consist of Money And I do hereby declare my Mind and Will to be that the said William BARNES anand John BARNES and the Survivor of them and the Executors and Administrators of such Survivor shall and do stand and be possessed of and interest in all the Monies to arise and be produced from my said Personal Estate and of which the same shall consist Upon the Trusts and to and for the Intents and Purposes herein after expressed and contained of and concerning the same (that is to say) Upon trust that they the said William BARNES and John BARNES or the Survivor of them of the Executors or Administrators of such Survivor shall and do in the first place cause my Body to be decently intered in the Parish of Surfleet and in the next place satisfy and discharge all such Debts as shall be due and owing by me to any Person or Persons whomsoever at the time of my decease and the Interest of such of the said Debts as shall carry Interest my Funeral and Testamentary Expences and in the next place do and shall pay unto or retain for themselves the said William BARNES and John BARNES and for my Daughter Elizabeth the wife of Robert DUCKET of Quadring aforesaid the Sum of Five Pounds a piece which I hereby give and bequeath unto the said William BARNES John BARNES and Elizabeth DUCKET accordingly And after Payment aand Satisfaction of the same and every part thereof respectively Then upon further Trust that they the said William BARNES and John BARNES or the Survivor of them or the Executors or Administrators of such Survivor shall and do pay and divide all the Residue of the Monies which may be then remaining in their Hands by virtue of the Trusts of this my Will unto and amongst my said Children Mary BARNES Sarah BARNES and David BARNES to be equally divided between them Share and Share alike ae and to be paid as and when they the said Mary BARNES Sarah BARNES and David BARNES shall respectively attain their Ages of twenty one years And I direct that the Interest thereof shall in the mean time be paid for their respective Maintenances E Educations Cloathing and Support I do make and appoint them the said William BARNES and John BARNES joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament and also Guardians and Trustees for my said Children Mary BARNES Sarah BARNES and David BARNES until they shall attain their respective Ages of twenty one years And my Mind and Will further is that it shall and may be lawful to and for the said William BARNES and John BARNES and the Survivor of them and the Heirs Executors and Admininistrators of such Survivor by and out of the Monies which may come to their Hands by virtue of this my Will to deduct and reimburse themselves respectively and to pay to their Co-Trustee all such Charges and Expences as they or any of them sshall or may expend or be put unto for or by reason of the Trusts hereby in them reposed or the Management or Execution thereof or any other thing in any wise relating thereto And also that they the said Trustees or either of them their or either their Heirs Executors or Adminstrators shall not be answerable for any more Monies than they respectively shall actually receive by virtue of this my Will nor for any Loss which shall happen of the said Monies or any part thereof so as the same happen without their wilful Neglect or Default nor the one of them for the other or others of them but each of them only for his own Acts Deeds Receipts or Disbursements I revoke all former Wills by me made and declare this only to be my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the Thirtieth day of June in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty three

    In March 2000 two gravestones probably bearing the name BARNES were seen in the churchyard not far from the path leading to the church door. An idyllic spot, a stone's throw from the river bank. Unfortunately the inscriptions could not be verified.
