"........ the first (headmaster) was Mr. Jesse WEST, tall, well built and with a neatly trimmed greying beard, he had an impressive presence. A master of the old school, he was a strict disciplinarian with a strong sense of duty; but little of humour.
In 1928 Mr. WEST retired and Major A. G. LANE was appointed as his successor. The two headmasters were in striking contrast, Major LANE with his strong sense of humour, an astonishing memory which never forgot a name or face, and a Sherlock Holmmes like ability to track down wrongdoers, was as much a headmaster of the new school as his predecessor had been of the old. His first act on becoming headmaster was to abolish corporal punishment in the school, retaining to himself the right to use it in extreme cases. Older members of the staff predicted gloomily that it would not work. When, later, however, they saw the improved relationship between teacher and taught they were amongst the first to admit that it had worked."
