      William, son of Elias BUTCHER, labourer, and Ann, was baptised at Martock, Somerset, on 25 February 1840.

      From the 1841 census of North Street, Martock, Somerset:
      *Elias BUTCHER, aged 25, agricultural labourer, Y;
      Mary BUTCHER, aged 25, Y;
      Matilda BUTCHER, aged 8, Y;
      James BUTCHER, aged 4, Y;
      William BUTCHER, aged 1, Y;

      At the age of 29 Mr. (sic) Elias BUTCHER sailed from London on or about 10 June 1842 on the ship Bolivar, arriving in Tasmania on 5 October. With him were his wife Mary (no age given), his 7 year old daughter Matilda, his 5 year old son James, and his youngest son William aged 2.

      No trace of the family has been found in the Tasmanian censuses for 1842, 1843, 1851 and 1857 but in early 1848 they were living at Stephenson Farm, Launceston, with three unnamed additions to the family. Elias was described as a farmer living iin a wooden house owned by Mr. STUBBS. The family consisted of 7 persons: one adult male and one adult female aged between 21 and 45, and 5 males and 1 female aged between 2 and 7 years. Three of the male children were stated to have been born in the colony. Their religion was Church of England.
