Jesse EDGOOSE was born at Gosberton, Lincolnshire, on 10 January 1813, son of James and Mary EDGOOSE.

James EDGOOSE had married Mary WINFREE by licence at Moulton, Lincolnshire, on 14 December 1807.
Jesse, son of James and Mary EDGOOSE of Gosberton, Lincolnshire, was baptised at Gosberton on 31 January 1813. His father was described as a farmer.

He was a Wesleyan Methodist minister from 1836 until his death twenty years later. He began his ministry in Alnick, Northumberland, moving to Hexham in 1837, Wolsingham in 1838, and Walsall in 1839.

"WESLEYAN HOME INTELLIGENCE [surnames capitalised]
ALNICK.- A tea party was held here, on Thursday, November 3rd, for the benefit of the Wesleyan Sunday School. Upwards of 100 teachers and friends were present. The Rev. J. BARROWCLOUGH presided. Appropriate addresses were delivered by the Rev. Messrs. J. BARROWCLOUGH, S. WILKINSON, J. EDGOOSE and other friends. On the following day, 116 of the children took tea with their teachers in the same room. On Sunday, Nov. 20th, a deputation from from the Newcastle District School Societety (Mr. R. S. STANLEY and Mr. Ralph WILSON) visited the school and examined the children, and Mr. R. S. STANLEY preached an excellent sermon on behalf of the institution. Mr. Ralph WILSON gave an excellent address to the parents. A Branch Union to the Newcastle District Society was formed, which it is hoped will prove a great advantage.

"Longton.- Our annual Missionary services have been recently held. Preparatory sermons were preached on Sunday, Nov. 12th, by the Rev. John TINDALL, of Redditch, and the Rev. Wm. FOX, of Hanley. The Public Meeting was held on the following evening. Thomas Phillips, Esq., of Newcastle, occupied the chair. Interesting speeches were delivered by the Revs. John TINDALL and William FOX; the audience was addressed also by the Revs. S. WEBB and J. EDGOOSE, and Mr. B. S. BROUGH. The attendance,considering the unfavourable state of the weather, was good, and the collections amounted to 30l. 2s 6d., - an advance on the preceding year.

He was third minister in the Leek Circuit (Staffordshire) in 1845 and 1846.
(A Brief History of the Rise and Progrees of Wesleyan Methodism in the Leek Circuit, by the Rev. J.B. DYSON). The other ministers were the Rev. John BOLAM and the Rev. Samuel BROWN. From a letter he wrote from Leek on 29 October 1845 it appears that he had recently arrived: "I have not been round my circuit yet". Another letter shows that he was still in Leek on 29 June 1847.

His wife Eliza EDGOOSE died at Whitehead Lane, Oldham, on 8 March 1848. The informant was Alice BROOM of West Street, Oldham. On 21 March 1848 he wrote from Walsall as follows:
"My Dear Brother
I have been for a long time purposing to write to you to thank you for the letter which you so promptly favoured me with when at the Lpool Conference but hitherto have not been able to execute my purpose - but seeing your name in the Watchman a week or two since in such interesting associations I could no longer defer - I sincerely congratulate you and yours on your nuptials - I know that is it not good for man to be alone - but whilst I offer you my congratulations I have to bespeespeak your condolence. You would perceive in the Watchman the notice of my dear wifes decease, she has been taken from me at a very short notice - only 14 days before her decease she was in perfect health this affliction commenced with Influenznza , brought on typhus this was thrown off but succeeded by Inflamation in the bowel and ultimately by gastric fever which terminated her earthly career - her death was the most triumphant I have ever witnessed - during her life she was reserved and said but little of her experience - but in her last hours she eminently magnified the Lord - her victory over the last Enemy was complete - but I am a widower indeed yet I dare not - I do not complain - though I sorrow yet not as them which have no hope she sleeps in Jesus and will awake on the morning of the Resurection when we shall be resurected enter our Father's House and be for ever with the Lord - I shall be glad to hear from you at any time and am Yours fraternally

The daughter of Matthias WHARRAM, farmer, she was described as a spinster of full age. NEWPORT.
On Tuesday last [6 November 1849], the twenty-fourth anniversary of the Newport Branch of the Wesleyan Missionary Society was held in the Wesleyan chapel, when the cause of missions was most ably and energetically advocated by William Henry DYSON, Esq., of Howden; the Revs. Isaac WOODCOCK, EDGOOSE, and WELLS, the circuit ministers. Mr. Joseph BRITTAIN, of Newport, ably occupied the chair. A most excellent preparatory sermon was preached on the previous Sunday, from Romans, 8th chap., 32nd verse. The congregations were large, and the collections somewhat exceeded last year."

Mr. R. JOHNSON of Howden, Yorkshire, attacked him in the pages of the British Temperance Advocate, Volume xvii, 1850:
"During the past week we have had two highly interesting lectures on Temperance from our talented friend Mr. LOMAX. These have caused great attraction, in consequence of its being understood that certain remarks made from the pulpit by Mr. EDGOOSE in support of the drinking of fermented or alcoholic drinks, would be answered. Two of our committee waited on the rev. gentleman, and gave him an invitation to attend the meetings and maintain the position laid down.This, however, he refused to do, stating he had a right to say what he thought proper in the pulpit. I do think it strange that a minister of the Gospel who thinks it below him to read our publications or attend our meetings should nevertheless take the trouble to try [in italics], round his ministerial circuit, to preach down teetotalism. I would say to such an one, in the words of Mr. E. TISDALL - 'If you be really desirous to gain truth, enter the lists of fair discussion, and we shall engage to find you an opponent worthy of your high position, as well as your intellectual attainments. But if you are only found preaching against us in a place where discussion is properly prohibited, we must come to the conclusion that you fear [in italics] the truth; for where doubt exists, there can be no faith.'
According to The Leeds Mercury of 7 December 1850 Jesse EDGOOSE, amongst others, addressed a meeting of the inhabitants of the ancient borough of Northallerton on 3 December.
He was second minister in the Thirsk Circuit in 1851. His superintendent was the Rev. W. ROBSON. The third minister was William JACKSON; John KEMP was supernumerary.

The Thirsk circuit plan for 1850-51 lists J. EDGOOSE, Northallerton, as a preacher. The Thirsk chapel, built in 1817, was demolished in 1967.
According to the 1851 census records he was visiting John & Hannah FAWCETT at 23 Kirkgate, Thirsk, on the night of the census. His wife and children were not with him:

He died of phtisis with laryngeal complication at Gate Fulford, Yorkshire, on Wednesday 16 July 1856 according to his obituary (Minutes of the Methodist Conference Vol. XIII 1855-1857 page 213) but on 17 July aged 43 according to his death certificate.

He was buried on 21 July 1856 in St. Oswald's churchyard, Fulford, Yorkshire, aged 43.

In his will made on 18 June 1856 he names as trustees his brother John James EDGOOSE and his friends Richard WALKER of the City of York, plumber, and Edward MARSH of Montrath Street, Walsall, general dealer:
"THIS IS THE LAST WILL of me Jesse EDGOOSE of Fulford, in the County of York wesleyan Minister made this Eighteenth day of June One thousand eight hundred and fifty six I BEQUEATH all the furniture and other Household Effects except my Books and Manuscripts which shall be in and about the Dwellinghouse wherein I shall reside at the time of my decease unto my dear Wife Mary EDGOOSE absolutely I GIVE DEVISE AND BEQUEATH all my real Estate And also all the residue and remainder of my personal estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever UNTO AND TO THE USE of my Brother John James EDGOOSE and my Friends Richard WALKER of the City of York Plumber and Edward MARSH of Montrath Street Walsall in the County of Stafford General Dealer their heirs executors administrators and assignsa UPON THE TRUSTS following that is to say UPON TRUST that they the said John James EDGOOSE Richard WALKER and Edward MARSH and the survivors and survivor of them and the heirs executors or administrators of the ultimate survivor of them and their or his assigns do and shall with all convenient speed after my decease make sale dispose of and convert into money the whole of my said real and residuary personal estate either by public auction or private contract as regards my said real estate with full power to purchase in the same at any auction and resell the same in either of the modes aforesaid without being responsible for any loss consequent thereupon and after thereout paying my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses UPON TRUST that they or other the Trustees and Trustee for the time being of this my Will do and shall place out and invest the net residue thereof in their or his names or name in or upon Government or real security or upon security of the Stock and Capital of any Public Company or Public Companies or upon the Promissory Note of the Trustees of any wesleyan Methodist Chapel in England with full power for my said Trustees and Trustestetee from time to time when they or he shall deem it expedient to alter and transpose such securities for others of the same or the like nature as often as shall be deemed expedient And do and shall stand and be possessed and interested of and i in the same trust monies stocks funds and securities UPON THE TRUSTS following that is to say UPON TRUST to pay apply and dispose of the income and produce thereof unto my said dear wife until the youngest for the time being of my three children by (my) first wife shall attain the age of twenty one years And from and (....) that period Then the same trust monies stocks funds and securities shall go and be IN TRUST for my said three children (or) such of them as shall live to attain the age of twenty one years (in) equal shares and proportions as tenants in common and not (..........) tenants their respective executors administrators and assigns (abso)lutely I DEVISE all estates vested in me as Trustee or (mor)tgagee UNTO AAND TO THE USE of the said John James EDGOOSE Richard WALKER and Edward MARSH Subject to the trusts and (..........) affecting the same respectively I EMPOWER the Trustees or (Tru)stee for the time being of my Will to give receipts for all monies and (.......)'s to be paid or delivered to such Trustees or Trustee by virtue of my (.........) And declare that such receipts shall exonerate the person or (per)sons taking the same from all liability to see to the application or (....)ositiion of the money or effects therein mentioned I EMPOWER the (Tru)stees or Trustee for the time being of my Will to carry out and execute or otherwise abrogate any contract or contracts entered into by me and remaining incomplete at the time of my decease AND I ALSO EMPOWER such Trustees and Trustee to compound or allow time for the payment of any debt or debts due to my estate and to satisfy or settle all demands against my estate whether supported by strictly legal evidence or nonot anand all accounts between me and any person or persons on such terms as my said Trustees or Trustee shall in their or his discretion think expedient and to refer any matters in difference relating to my affairs to arbitration I DECLARE that if mmy Trustees herein named or either of themor any Trustees or Trustee to be appointed under this clause shall die or be unwilling or incompetent to execute the trusts of my Will it shall be lawful for the competent Trustees or Trustee for the time being (if any) whether retiring from the office of Trusteeor not or (if none) for the excutors or administrators of the last surviving Trustee to substitute by any writing under their or his hands or hand any fit person or persons in whoom alonne or (as the case may be) jointly with any surviving or continuing Trustees or Trustee my trust estate shall be vested And I exempt every Trustee of my Will from liability for losses occurring without his own wilful default And authorizize him t to retain and allow to his Co-Trustee all expenses incidental to the Trusteeship I APPOINT the said John James EDGOOSE Richard WALKER and Edward MARSH EXECUTORS IN TRUST of this my Will and also GUARDIANS and GUARDIAN of my said infant children hereby revoking all former Wills by me made IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand the day and year aforesaid (signed) Jesse EDGOOSE"

AGED 79 YEARS.
Jesse EDGOOSE, who was born at Gosberton, Lincolnshire, January 10th 1813. In the twentieth year of his age he began to attend the Wesleyan ministry; under the first sermon he was convinced of sin; and a month afterwards found redemption througgh faith in the blood of Christ. About a year after his conversion, he became a Local Preacher, and was very acceptable in that capacity. Becoming a candidate for the ministry, he passed the usual examinations, and was appointed to a circuit at the following Conference of 1836. He was very studious in his habits, his reading extensive, and he became well acquainted with the doctrines of the Gospel. His talents as a Preacher were of a respectable order; and his discources, being ststrictly evangelical and practical, were especially calculated to instruct and edify believers, as well as to alarm sinners, and direct penitents to exercise faith in the atonement for present salvation. He had a clear and comprehensive knowledgdge of the doctrines of Methodism, and made them prominent in his public ministrations. He had a conscientious attachment to our discipline, and did not fail to support it in trying circumstances. He was of a retiring disposition; his piety was genuine and consistent, and he was highly respected by those who were best acquainted with him. On account of severe affliction, he had to desist from preaching altogether, in April, 1855, and was obliged to become a Supernumerary at the follollowing Conference, after which he removed into the York circuit. He endured his protracted and severe affliction with true Christian patience and resignation, and found the grace of God to support and comfort him. For many months he could only s speak in a whisper, and a short time before his death his bodily weakness was extreme; but he still had strong confidence in Christ, and a clear prospect of heaven. He calmly fell asleep in Jesus, at Fulford, near York, on Wednesday, July 16th, 1856, in the forty-fourth year of his age, and the twentieth of his ministry.
