Jemima EDGOOSE was born on 29 April 1821, daughter of James and Mary EDGOOSE.

James EDGOOSE had married Mary WINFREE at Moulton, Lincolnshire, on 14 December 1807.
Jemima, daughter of James and Mary EDGOOSE of Gosberton, was baptised at Gosberton, Lincolnshire, on 20 May 1821. Her father was described as a yeoman.

In the 1841 census returns for Bourn Road, Spalding, Jemimah EDGOOSE was described as a 20 year old staymaker living with 60 year old Elizabeth CHATTERTON of independent means. Both were born in Lincolnshire.

She is listed under 'staymakers' in Slater's 1847 Leicester directory at 3 Chatham Street.
At the time of the 1851 census she was lodging at 3 Chatham Street, Leicester, with her sister Caroline BAKER and family. Jemima was described as a 29 year old staymaker, born at Gosberton, Lincolnshire.

She was married on 17 December 1855 at St. Stephen's, Birmingham, to William WADE, the 27 year old shoemaker son of George WADE, carpenter. They gave their addresses as Summer Lane, Birmingham. Witnesses were Stephen WADE and Ann JACOBS. Jemima gave her age as 30.

It is not known whether there was any connection between William WADE and William Francis WADE M.D. (later SIR Willoughby) of Summer Lane, resident physician to the Birmingham General Hospital. (Willoughby Francis WADE, William WADE, and George WADE were not listed in the 1851 census returns for Summer Lane).
Their son James Edgoose WADE was born at William Street, St. Margaret's, Leicester, on 27 October 1856. The father, William WADE, a journeyman shoemaker of 14 William Street, Leicester, informed the registrar.

Her son William WADE died of hemoptysis at 4 Castle Street, Leicester, on 20 May 1882 aged 24. His occupation was shoe clicker. His mother Jemima WADE of 17 Kent Street, Leicester, informed the registrar. Surprisingly, although she could write she made her mark.

Her son Albert WADE died at 17 Kent Street, Leicester, on 15 January 1884. He was a 23 year old shoe rivetter. The informant on 16 January was his mother Jemima WADE of the same address who was present when he died. Surprisingly, although she could write, she made her mark

At the time of the 1891 census she was living alone at 2 Court R, Northgate Street, Leicester. She was described as 71 years old, employed as a seamstress, and born at Gosberton, Lincolnshire.

She was living with her sister Kerenhappuch WEST at 30 St. Saviour's Road, Leicester, when she wrote to her sister Elizabeth O'CONNOR on 14 September 1895. The letter was addressed to Mrs. D. O'Connor, Winfrey Cottage, Newland Street, Waverley, Sidney (sic), N.S.W., and was postmaked Waverley N.S.W. De 21 1895. She wrote that she had not seen her brother Jesse EDGOOSE's children since 1853. She gave incorrect ages for his children.

At the time of the 1901 census she was living at 32 St.Saviour's Road, Leicester, with her nephew William WEST, his wife Rachel, and their two sons William A. WEST and Frank W. WEST. Jemima (Jemmima in the index) was described as an 82 year old widow living on own means. Her sister Kerrenhappuck WEST lived next door at No. 30 St. Saviour's Road.

She died in the Evington Poor Law Infirmary at Billesdon, Leicestershire, on 21 September 1909 aged 88. Her grandaughter Emily ARMSTRONG of 107 Wennington Road, Southport, informed the registrar.

NOTES & QUERIES:
"Mrs. GEE" was probably her cousin Emma WINFREY who married Harry GEE in 1857. The 1901 census shows Emma GEE to have been deaf.
The Leeds Mercury reported the death aged 61 of Harry GEE of Leicester at St. Leonard's-on-Sea in its edition of 12 January 1895. He was said to have spent the early years of his life at Long Sutton, and married a sister of the late Alderman R. F. WINFREY of that town. He had been in business as a draper in Leicester for over forty years.
Who was "her dear Emma"?
Was Emma WINFREY the Mrs. GEE referred to, or was Mrs. GEE Emma's mother-in-law?
