A report in the Sydney Morning Herald dated 16 July 1954 tells of her witnessing a fireball pass over her house and hitting her neighbour's house 'like a shell blast':
"Fireball Hits Home Like Shell Blast
MELBOURNE. Thursday. --- A fireball struck the home of Mrs. R. JONES, in Scotts Grove, Glen Iris, smashing the chimney and part of the roof during a Melbourne thunderstorm this afternoon.
Ceilings in four of the rooms were badly damaged.
Mrs. JONES, who was alone in the house, said "It was like the explosion of a shell -- a terrible experience.
"In an instant the house was filled with thick greyish smoke.
"Parts of the chimney collapsed into the dining room. Soot and pieces of brick were scattered all over the place."
A neigbour, Mrs. E. EDGOOSE, said she saw the fireball sweep over her home and hit the chimney of Mrs. Jones's house.
"It was like a bright yellow ball about 12 inches wide," Mrs. EDGOOSE said.
A hailstorm followed the fireball."
