  WALTER JAMES GILMORE 1918-1943 The birth of Walter J. GILMORE, mother's maiden name BUTCHER, was registered in 1918. (GRO March Q 1918 [BUTCHER] Farnham 2a 185) The marriage between Walter J. GILMORE and Irene POPE was registered in 1940. (GRO March Q 1940 Basingstoke 2c 901) He was commissioned into the Hampshire Regiment Territorial Army on 16 July 1939. The TA was mobilized on 24 August 1938. War Substantive Lt. on 16 January 1941. Temporary Capt. 13 May 1942 to 8 May 1943. Captain Walter James GILMORE, 96122, 2/4th Bn, Hampshire Regiment, who died at Pichon, Tunisia, on 8 April 1943 aged 25, was the son of John Herbert and Lily Emily GILMORE, and husband of Irene GILMORE of Martham, Norfolk. A Solicitor, he was awarded the Hampshire Law Society Prize in 1939. He was buried in Enfidaville War Cemetery, Tunisia, 100 kilometers south of Tunis on the main coast road.
