EDGOOSE, Henry (1857-1914)
Henry EDGOOSE was born at Kirton-in-Holland, Lincolnshire, on 9 October 1857, the son of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE's daughter Sarah Lawson EDGOOSE. The name of the father, John Metcalfe WESTMORELAND, did not appear on the birth certificate.

The marriage between Joel EDGOOSE and Mary Elizabeth Grace JONES has not been traced.
At the time of the 1861 census he was living at Skirbeck Quarter, Lincolnshire:

He married Annie RENNISON of Crookes, the 20 year old daughter of blacksmith William RENNISON, at the Parish Church of St. Thomas Crookes, Sheffield, Yorkshire, on 14 May 1877. Henry was a 20 year old brickmaker from Crookes, the son of Joel EDGOOSE, labourer. Witnesses were Henry STAPLETON (?) and Mary RENNISON.

He was described as a brickmaker of Broomspring Lane, Eccleshall Bierlow, Yorkshire, when his son Joseph EDGOOSE was born on 20 July 1877.
By 14 July 1879 when twins William and Ruth Annie were born he had moved to 11 Shepherd Street, Sheffield. He was still a brickmaker.
His wife Annie gave her address as 16 Morton Street, Sheffield, when their son William died there on 25 June 1880, but Henry EDGOOSE is not listed at that address in the Burgess Rolls for the years 1879-82.
In the 1881 census returns for 16 Morton Street, Sheffield, Henry EDGOOSE is listed as a labourer:

His daughter Naomi was born at 110 Grammar Street, Nether Hallam, Yorkshire, on 13 April 1882. Henry was by then working as a general labourer.
When Ruth Annie died on 8 July 1883 he was a gas labourer of 98 Grammar Street - as he was when Harriet Annie was born on 16 March 1884 and when she died on 11 June 1886.
By 1887 he had moved to 76 Grammar Street, and his daughter Miriam was born there on 5 January 1887. Naomi died there at the age of 6 on 15 May 1888.
His wife's mother Ruth RENNISON died aged 78 in 1888.

Ruth RENNISON, widow, of 72 Broomhall Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire, was buried in the General Cemetery on 11 April 1888 aged 78.

He was last listed at 76 Grammar Street in the Sheffield Burgess Roll for the year 1888-89.
Henry, his wife Annie, a son Edward and a daughter Marian (= Miriam?), together with an Eliza EDGOOSE (?), Elizabeth DAWSON (=Lizzie?), Kirke WRENCH, and James HAYNES sailed on the ship City of New York travelling 2nd Cabin Class from Gloucester in May 1889 [a passenger is noted as having jumped overboard on 17 May 1889]. Henry was described as a farmer:

He and his family went to Aberdeen, South Dakota, USA, when his aunt Elizabeth EDGOOSE (1852-1944) returned there in May 1889 after a short visit to England. He appears with his wife and children and Harriet COCKER nee EDGOOSE (1858-1916) in a family photograph taken outside the Aberdeen greenhouse. According to a letter written to Harriet COCKER by her sister Elizabeth EDGOOSE, Henry was in Aberdeen on 2 June 1889 working in her garden. (His daughter Louise FERGUSON said that her father had been born in Birmingham and went to Aberdeen, South Dakota, to work for his Aunt Harriet.

His daughter Louise EDGOOSE was born in Superior on 9 June 1895.
From 1897 until 1904 he is listed at 527 Bay, Superior, Wisconsin, with Joseph E. EDGOOSE.

"$600 BONDS PRESCRIBED
The case against Harry E. EDGOOSE, who was arrested on the steamer Kerr when she arrived in port Monday morning, came up in municipal court yesterday. He entered a plea of not guilty to serious charges that were preferred against him, and wound over to the next term of the superior court. In default of securing bonds to the amount of $600, EDGOOSE was committed to the county jail."

EIGHT YEARS IN PRISON - Judge SMITH Sets the Limit for Man Who Abuses Daughter
Superior, Aug. 21 - Harry EDGOOSE about 50 years of age, was sentenced by Judge SMITH, in the superior court, to eight years in the state prison at Waupun. The sixteen-year-old daughter of the man was the complaining witness. Judge SMITH gave him the stiffest sentence that he had meted out to any one for years; stating that he thought it was the most heinous case that had been before him for a long time.

EDGOOSE, Joseph E., riveter, b. 527 Bay.
Annie EDGOOSE was living at Connor's Point when she divorced Henry in 1905. The case was reported in the Duluth News Tribune of 3 February 1905.
In 1905 he moved to Waupun, Wisconsin, presumably to the State Prison there. In fact, he was listed in the 1905 Wisconsin State Census as Henry EAGOOS (sic), convict, day laborer, Waupun, Dodge, Wisconsin.

His wife and sons were listed in directories at 527 Bay in 1906, 1907, and in the 1910 census. The sons only were listed in 1908 and 1909.
His former wife Annie was described in the 1910 census of 527 Bay Street, Superior City, as Annie WALL. She had been married for two years and nine months. Her sons and daughters were living in the same house.

According to his daughter Louisa he died in Superior in 1914.

"OBITUARY
HENRY H. EDGOOSE, aged 59 years, died at a local hospital at 9.35pm last night. The dead man formerly resided at 307 1/2 Tower avenue, before being removed to a local hospital where death occurred. Relatives of the dead man are supposed to be living in this city, although they have not been located yet by Undertaker LeSage who has charge of the remains. Until relatives are located, funeral arrangements will be pending."

On 24 June 1914 the same paper reported that services for Henry H. EDGOOSE would be held at the Le Sage undertaking rooms at 2 pm. The remains were then to be conveyed to The Salvation Army barracks on Broadway where services would be held at 2.15 pm. The body was to be buried in Greenwood Cemetery (also known as Poor Farm Cemetery), Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota, USA.
