The birth of Alfred Benjamin BAILEY was registered in 1853. His date of birth on 9 November 1853 is at variance with that written in the margin of the parish register and has not been verified. He is said to have been born at Bishopgate, London.

John James and Alfred Benjamin, sons of John and Jane BAILEY of Bell Square, were baptised at St. Botolph, Bishopgate, on 22 January 1854. John BAILEY's occupation was policeman. The register margin records John James' date of birth as 22 June 1851 [sic] and that of Alfred Benjamin as 19 [sic] November 1853.

In October 1866, a few months after the loss of his wife, John Bailey was injured in the course of a call to Gooch and Cousin's warehouse. This injury resulted in his death, leaving his three young sons bereft of mother and father. His death aged 43 was registered in 1866.

For a while, the boys were cared for by their mother's eldest sister, Mrs. Lucy ALCOCK [sic]. The family was kept together for a while, after which, no doubt, the burden became more than Lucy ALCOCK [sic] could bear. She decided to leave London and go to Nottingham, taking Alfred Benjamin BAILEYwith her.
He and his brother John James were to keep closely in touch throughout the remainder of their lives.
