RICHARD LEEDER 1842-1883
Richard LEEDER was born at Acle, Norfolk, on 2 September 1841, son of Richard and Elizabeth LEEDER.

Richard LEEDER had married Elizabeth BROWNING at Limpenhoe, Norfolk, on 13 October 1840.
From the 1851 census of The Street, Acle, Norfolk:
Richard LEEDER, head, aged 31, hairdresser, born at Bungay, Suffolk;
Elizabeth LEEDER, wife, aged 29, shoe binder, born at Ramsden, Essex;
*Richard LEEDER, son, aged 9, scholar, born at Acle;
Ellen LEEDER, daughter, aged 4, scholar, born at Acle;
Julia LEEDER, daughter, aged 7 months, born at Acle.

Edith Naomi EDGOOSE (1898-1993) described him as a "gentleman's gentleman" by which she presumably meant a butler. He certainly visited Menton in the south of France and travelled up the Nile in Egypt (see letters to his parents).
He wrote to his parents from a boat on the River Nile, Egypt, on 29 December 1874. He appears to have been in the employ of the Hon. H. G. BAXTER.
On 29 August 1876 he presented his father with two books, "Those Holy Fields - Palestine Illustrated by Pen and Pencil" and "The Land of The Pharoahs - Egypt and Sinai Illustrated by Pen and Pencil". Each book was prefaced by an expensively produced bookplate in black and gold (leather?) inscribed "Presented to Mr. Richard LEEDER on his 56th birthday by his son Richard August 29. 1876". These books were treasured enough to be specifically bequeathed to Walter Leeder EDGOOSE in the will of Richard LEEDER senior. They are now (2002) in the possession of Jeremy Lester EDGOOSE.
He married Betsy FERGUSON according to the rites of the Congregational Church at 2 Union Place, Trinity, North Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, on 26 February 1880. She was 31 years old, gave her usual residence as 2 Union Place, North Leith, and wawas the daughter of John FERGUSON deceased, a master joiner, and Janet FERGUSON his wife, nee MITCHELL. Richard LEEDER described himself as a fruiterer and grocer of 32 Thurlow Place, London, son of Richard LEEDER, a master grocer and draper, and Elizabeth his wife, formerly BROWNING. Witnesses were Alex McINTOSH and Jessie Martha PETERSEN.
From 1881 to 1883 he was a greengrocer and fruiterer at 32 Thurloe Place, South Kensington (Kelly's Post Office Directories). According to the directories William John HAND took over from William WARDER & SONS, fruiters, in 1877. He was replaced by Richard LEEDER in 1881 who was there until BOYALL & MINTON took over in 1884.
From the 1881 Census Return for 32 Thurloe Place, Kensington:
*Richard LEEDER, head, married, aged 39, fruiter, born at Acle, Norfolk;
Betsey [sic] LEEDER, wife, married, aged 32, born at Inchture, Perthshire, Scotland.

Also living at the same address were John SEYMOUR, 46, a butler and domestic servant, his wife Georgiana, 45, and their six year old son John A. SEYMOUR.
He died at Acle on 9 June 1883. On his death certificate he was described as a 42 year old greengrocer. His father was with him when he died.

On the 19 July 1883 Administration of the Personal Estate of Richard LEEDER late of 35 Queen's Gate Terrace, Kensington in the County of Middlesex, who died 9 June 1883 at Acle in the County of Norfolk, was granted at the Principal Probate Registry to Elizabeth LEEDER of 32 Thurloe Place Kensington, widow the relict. Personal Estate £150.
