ERIC RAE ALEXANDER 1905-1990
Eric Rae ALEXANDER was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but his family came from Glasgow. According to his death registration in 1990, he was born on 4 January 1905.
He worked as an engineer at the RAE in Farnborough, designing and making aircraft engines.

On 6 May 1931 Mr. Eric Rae ALEXANDER BSc had to bale out of Hawker Horsley J8932 at South Farnborough, Hampshire They were testing in high wind and entered a spin at around 2,000 ft. Flight-Lieutenant Henry Richard Dennis WAGHORN, AFC, the Schneider Trophy pilot, who was badly injured in a parachute descent, hit ground with some force before his parachute opened fully. He had a broken thigh, a serious head injury, and a fractured ankle and died on 7th May 1931 in Cambridge Military Hospital. Mr. E. R. ALEXANDER, a civilian assistant, landed on the glass roof of a factory and had a cut ankle. Both occupants jumped at around 300 ft after trying to regain control.

He had a special gold 'caterpillar' badge -this was to signify he was a member of the caterpillar club -those who had bailed out of aircraft.

According to an e-mail from his daughter-in-law Priscilla ALEXANDER in 2006 he was transferred to the USA during the war to work on American warplanes and his wife Brenda was a hospital doctor.
The family lived on the Hog's Back for a number of years in William GLENDINNING's house. Later they moved to Marvis Garth, Hillside Road, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

According to the GRO indexes for England & Wales Eric Rae ALEXANDER died aged 84 in January 1990. His date of birth was said to be 4 January 1905.

If his date of death was 24 January 1990 he would have been 85 years old rather than 84.
