JOHN BAILEY 1821-1866
John, son of James and Jane BAILEY of Boot Street, Shoreditch, Middlesex, was born on 25 December 1821 and baptised at St. Leonard's, Shoreditch, on 27 January 1822. His father was a carpenter.

John BAILEY of full age, a bachelor, a policeman residing at the police station, son of James BAILEY carpenter, married Jane MILES of full age, spinster, residing at 21 Moorfields, daughter of Joseph MILES carrier, at the Parish Church of St. Giles, Cripplegate, in the County of London, on 27 February 1851. Witnesses were James BAILEY and Mary Ann METCALFE.

Reuben MILES and John BAILEY were executors of the will of Reuben's father Joseph MILES (1794-1861). John BAILEY was the son-in-law of Joseph MILES and the husband of the latter's daughter Jane (1829-1866).
Years later his son Alfred displayed a framed certificate at home that was presented to his father for bravery and intrepidity in saving lives in a fire.

In October 1866, a few months after the loss of his wife, John Bailey was injured in the course of a call to Gooch and Cousen's warehouse. This injury resulted in his death on 24 October 1866, leaving his three young sons bereft of mother and father. His death aged 43 was registered in 1866.

The fire, which was actually at the Haydon Square Railway Goods Station of the London and North Western Railway where Gooch and Cousens stored large quantities of wool, was in the early morning of 11 September 1866. It was widely reported in the newspapers of the time. "Several persons were hurt during the raging of the fire by the falling of the roof of the station, and by the giving way of a stone staircase; but there was only one serious case, and this was taken to the London Hospital."

For a while, the boys were cared for by their mother's eldest sister, Mrs. Lucy ALCOCK [sic]. The family was kept together for a while, after which, no doubt, the burden became more than Lucy ALCOCK [sic] could bear. She decided to leave London and go to Nottingham, taking Alfred Benjamin BAILEYwith her.

John James, the eldest son, wrote that when his Aunt Lucy left to go to Nottingham, he remained in London in a position of some kind in Regent Street. Left by himself, he got into bad company, lost his job, drifted around London and tried to enllist with a group that was going to Malta. He was unsuccessful in doing this -- or in getting any kind of work -- and was destitute in Soho when his Aunt Lucy heart of his predicament. She then set herself to the task of helping John J . emigrate to Canada. He settled down, married, and reared a large family in Ontario. He kept closely in touch with his brother Alfred Benjamin throughout the remainder of their lives.

Joseph William, the youngest son, was only about four years of age when his father died. At the time his Aunt Lucy went to Nottingham, he was apparently placed in a police orphanage. Subsequently he was adopted by a Mr. Muir and was taken to Houston, Texas, U.S.A., where he eventually married and reared a large family.
