    • ELSIE EILEEN WHATMORE nee HARWIN 1915-2005

Elsie Eileen WHATMORE was born on 9 May 1915 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, the only child of Fred and Gertrude HARWIN. According to the registration of her death in 2015, she was born on 9 May 1915.
      (GRO June Q 1915 [ADAMS] Sheffield 9C 1188)

Fred was a railway engine driver and the family lived in Fir Vale, in the north eastern part of the city.

After leaving school, Elsie trained to be a primary school teacher at Hockerill College, Bishop's Stortford. She taught at Greystones School and at Carlisle Street School in Sheffield. During the War she gave up teaching and worked as a clerk at Firth Brown's Steel Works.

She married Eric WHATMORE at Brightside Church, Sheffield, on 16 September 1939.
      (GRO September Q 1939 Sheffield 9C 1111)

Elsie had known Eric since she was sixteen and they were together until his death in 2003. They had one child, Rhys David WHATMORE, in 1947.

In 1953 Elsie moved with her family to Aberystwyth and from 1954 until 2003 lived at Tanyfron, Llanbadarn Fawr. She was very active in the community and was a member of the WRVS, the Women's Institute, the Mother's Union, and the Community Assocciation. She was very good at calligraphy and for some fifty years her posters advertising local events were to be seen around the village. She helped organise horticultural shows, carnivals, and eisteddfodau. For a time Elsie worked as Assistant Cook at Cwmpadarn School.
