THE TIMBER FIRM (1893-1995)
The firm of W. L. EDGOOSE & SONS LTD. was a sub-contractor to George Kemp, Stroud & Co. Ltd. of Aldershot in 1943-1944. The so-called "Hospital Boats" were designed for a life of 6 months using a green oak frame and internal grade plywood. These flat-bottomed craft were intended to carry the wounded to ships waiting offshore during the Normandy landings. They were featured in a Motor Boat & Yachting article in the late 1960s, and several readers reported that they still had one which had been converted to a pleasure boat after the war.
